John Chen (piano), Julia McCarthy (violin) 
John and Julia are two of New Zealand's finest young musicians, and have known
each other from a very young age.
John was the winner of the International Sydney International Piano Competition
last year. He was also the first competitor from Australia or New Zealand to
win the prestigious competition since it began in 1977.
Julia was the leader of the NZSO National Youth Orchestra and the winner of both
the Victoria University Concerto Competition and the Wellington Youth Orchestra
Concerto Competition. Julia has played with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra,
the NZSO Chamber Orchestra and the Wellington Sinfonia
With Julia now based in Wellington and John in Auckland, the pair have managed
to keep up to date with one another's local and international successes. The
duo are looking forward to performing together again. "We can be free to
express ourselves, and the different things we both bring to a performance can
merge together into something really exciting," says Julia.
